I hear that you were born in St. Thomas. What is something special that you appreciate most about the island?
I hope this doesn’t sound strange coming from someone who was born on the island, but I appreciate the beaches most of all. When I was growing up my father would take my big brother and me every Sunday.
Growing up, when did people first start noticing your musical ability?
I think it was when I began singing in church at about the age of five or six. I didn’t do many solos back then I just sang along with the rest of the church as we sang the hymns and responses. The older members would tell me after the service how much they enjoyed my singing, but my friends teased me.
By the late 1990s you were living in Miami and your skills were in demand at the clubs on South Beach. What happened at the New Year's Eve party in 1998, that motivated you to surrender your life to God?
It seemed as if God was speaking directly to me. I heard him ask, “Do you want to do this for the rest of your life?” The club was filled with smoke and every night I would leave with my clothes and hair wreaking with the smell of the awful stuff. I can’t quite explain what happened fully, but I left there that night knowing that it would be the last time I would use my music to serve my own self interests.
Since that turning point, what have you felt is God's purpose for your life?
I believe that God has called me to preach the Gospel, not with words, but with music. He has shown me that because of my blindness, I can be a source of great encouragement to others.
Outside of music, what are some of your interests or hobbies?
I love to follow national and international politics. I love to learn and experience things that are totally new to me. I love to spend time with friends especially when there is a hot topic to discuss.
Do you have any tips you could share about balancing ministry and personal life?
The word of God says to be temperate in all things. Too much of one thing can never be good. Good quality living requires balance.
One of the great testimonies that God helps you to share is how He enables us to triumph, no matter our circumstance. For people battling challenges in life, what principles of overcoming adversity can you share?
Focus on God and not your problem. He has promised that he will not give us more than we can bear. The word of God says that even in the valley of the shadow of death He is with us. He will always leave us tokens of His love, but we must be willing to recognize them when they appear and respond with praise and thanksgiving.
What are some of the things that you are praying to accomplish in 2007?
With each year that passes I want my relationship with my heavenly father to grow. I have also started my own home based recording studio. I’m in the process of teaching myself how to record and mix my own music. Most of the tracking of my last project was done by me. This year I’m hoping and praying that God would bless me with opportunities to record for other people.
Tell us about a special moment you and God shared this past year.
Last year I had some unexpected challenges, but God was always with me. I’m learning more and more that in my weakness his strength is made perfect. He is also teaching me to depend on him more for strength and power and not to depend on my skills and what I can do for myself.
One of your great joys is using your music to introduce people to Jesus and help them prepare for His soon coming. What is one story or example that captures one of these moments?
A few years ago a friend shared with me after one of my concerts about a friend he had that was dying of aids. “My friend’s favorite song in those last moments was BE Thou Faithful” he said. I count it a privilege to be used by God in such a way.
What is something that you are looking forward to in heaven?
I want to go site seeing around Heaven and the rest of the universe. I want to meet all the people that were introduced to God through my music. I want to look in to the face of Jesus for I believe that none of life’s perplexities and trials is worthy to be compared with just one look into his glorious face.
